Paolo | Do you like acting? |
Indya | I like acting. I think it’s a really fun way to tell stories. |
Paolo | Do you think you’ll be able to play Juliet ? |
Indya | Yes. I mean, the story of Romeo and Juliet is about sacrificing for love, and I know what that’s like. I know what it’s like to sacrifice for love and romance, and to sacrifice for love and family that isn’t romance—or to sacrifice for love that isn’t about sex. I know what it’s like to sacrifice for the love of a community. But I think we trespass convention when we create a black Juliet. I think this trespasses convention because the conventional Romeo and Juliet are a white couple. So when you make them black, you’re trespassing convention. When you make Juliet trans you trespass convention, because Juliet was not trans. |
Paolo | Maybe we’re not trespassing because love, beauty and goodness has no borders… You are beautiful, you know you are beautiful. |
Indya | People think this about me a lot. I appreciate it. But I don’t like it because if someone is calling me beautiful, I think about what they think is beautiful and I feel like a lot more people should be included in how we see beauty. I think beauty doesn’t have to be fixed to conventional ideas about aesthetic appeal. I think beauty should change, and the way we see or understand it should change. |
Paolo | Do you remember your first love? |
Indya | Yeah, I do. I remember my first love, but my first love... didn’t survive because I didn’t nourish our love in a way that helped it to grow. I think I hurt it. I hurt the love and it died. I didn’t know how to love my first love. |
Paolo | Do you remember your last kiss? |
Indya | My last kiss? Yeah. It was before I came here. Kissing them tastes like... Drinking fresh water. Clean water. It’s an exchange of water from different rivers. It’s like that I think, yeah; like when two rivers from different mountains meet. |
